I'm not a natural animal lover. I'm also not an animal hater but its just never felt in my nature to be comfortable around animals, a Neanderthal at heart I guess. But every now and then animal moments occur, brief moments that open the door to a more comfortable feeling and a voice that whispers "they're not all out to eat you Dean".
Today I had one of those moments with a horse called JJ. He belongs to Neil and Janine, and despite my constant badgering to Nay that "I'm not riding any horses when we visit your dads" Janine gave me a little talk about the way horses behave that appealed to my logical nature and I felt comfortable and confident enough to saddle up on JJ.
Second time I've ever got on a horse and after a reminder of the positioning, basic moves and commands etc I spent the best part of an hour guiding JJ around an obstacle course. It felt brilliant. A really big deal for a self confessed animalphobe, and a weird but empowering feeling being in control of and working with such a big animal.
Nay's a pro in my book with horses, and so while I was prancing about like a schoolgirl with his first pony she hopped on the Harley for a blast around the highway with Neil, declaring that "we need to get a bike" when she returned.
Sceptical and having never ridden on a motor bike before I needed to have a go. After all, this trip is about experiencing new things and ticking things off the to do list, and if I was to take a look down the list in head titled "quite dangerous so probably not a good idea but you should do it because your a man with balls not boobs", then riding on a Harley will be there.
Sure enough - brilliant.
A day of firsts is of course not complete without a first ever go at....dancing. Yep that's right. Nay and I....Dancing....To music...All romantic and that. Neil and Janine enjoy Ceroc dancing, named "C'est rock", or "This is rock" in French after its origins with American soldiers dancing to rock and roll with French ladies during the war. It's basically a catalog of core moves led by the man that can be pieced together to flow nicely and basically get you dancing. In lines we learned 3 mini routines of 2 or 3 steps and swapping partners every time we eventually pieced them all together to make a dancing sequence. Pretty cool.
The people were awesome and totally great with us given that we were both beginners. It was a lot of fun and if nothing else we now have at least one little routine to pull off together instead of just propping up the bar at a wedding...not quite dirty dancing yet though but all in good time.
Didn't get any pictures but will try and talk Nay into filming the routine to share with you in the next few days.
