A chance to stretch our tropical skills
presented itself at Mission Beach south of Cairns. All along the beach lie palm
trees dropping dozens of coconuts onto the sand.
Nay collected one and in true castaway fashion I tried throwing it at trees and smashing it with rocks but soon realised a much more tactful approach was required…
Using a sharp stone I began to slice into
the thick skin.
Then once I could grab some of the furry
stuff inside I could pull of strips of the husk until we were left with the nut.
Jamming a knife into the three little holes
at the top of the coconut got us access to the sweet stuff.
A pretty surreal experience…and a ginger
hairy hire car at the end of it all.
