Rockhampton likens itself to a town from
the Wild West era. All the building here look like something from a John Wayne
film and there are cattle ranches everywhere as you drive into the city.
We headed down to the botanical gardens and
zoo to get our very first look at that good old ozzie icon the Koala! Cool to
look at but that’s all you can do…look at them. They don’t do much, in fact
they don’t do anything at all. Just sit there hugging that tree like it was the
last one on earth.
They were not particularly big, about the size of a cat, and
apparently they sleep all the time because so much of their energy is required
to digest their eucalyptus diets. They should just move onto cereal or
something tastier that will also allow them to fit more into their day! Not a
particularly ambitious animal the Koala it has to be said.
Also had a bit of fun with this cheeky
monkey. When I got the camera out she screamed and ran away from the window but
then came back for a lovely pose and to stare at me through the glass. They are
unbelievably human in both appearance and behaviour.
Tea time in the beef capital of Australia
means only one thing – Steak and Chips. We headed to the world renowned Great
Western Hotel for ours which was lush. Saloon doors, blokes at the bar in
cowboy hats and screens on every wall playing video clips of horse and bull
rodeos.
We noticed a door at the back of the bar and when we stepped through
there was a rode arena right out the back with seating for about 2000 people!
They hold rodeos here every fortnight and the footage playing on the tele’s are
the local nut jobs from the town who try their luck against the toughest one
ton monsters from all over Queensland.
