From Bushfire to Wetlands

Two and half hours in the air landed us in Cairns, home of course to the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef. As we approached the view of the water from the sky was incredible.

We picked up our new wheels for the next journey along the Queensland coast, a nice silver Toyota Corolla to deliver us into Brisbane, Surfers Paradise and a bunch of roller coasters.
As always we try to arrange the backseats into a bed with no luck, guess it’ll be the trusty tent for the next 3 weeks again then…

As normal we headed straight into the local Information Center where we were greeted by the Australian Dale Winton who whilst very helpful in getting us organized had no problem highlighting how wonderful our time will be here. According to Dale:

“Every 6 weeks Cairns gets something called a King Tide where the sea water rises up into the city…its due tonight. Also we are just about to embark on the wet season here caused by the rainforest so prepare for a heap of rain and possible flooding. I should also mention that other than the barrier reef there’s nothing else here except for coffee, banana and sugar cane plantations. Oh yeah and before I forget, if you’re planning on camping be aware of the giant bird eating spider”….THANKS DALE – WHAT A BLOODY WELCOME!

A bird eating spider?! What the heck is that all about?! Why can’t it just eat flies like every other spider does? Why does it have to go and get so big headed and declare that “flies are not enough for me, I need to eat BIRDS!”.. Nuts, absolutely bloody nuts. I’m so annoyed at the arrogance of this spider that I probably wont even be scared of it if we see one. I’ll just want to sit it down and put it in its place otherwise if nature carries on at this rate it wont be long until tourists fly into Cairns and Dale has to brief them on the dangers of the giant toddler eating spiders…
